Old collection scam with a new twist

In Nobles County in the US a new twist on an old debt collection scam has been recently reported.

Under the old debt collection scam method a person receives a phone call from someone pretending to be a legitimate debt collector. The caller demands payment or bank account numbers, and threatens the unsuspecting person with jail if they do not comply.

The new scam sees the caller pretending to be from the Nobles County Attorney office. The caller threatens the victim with arrest and charges of fraud if payment is not immediately received.

By bringing in a Local element into the scam gives it more legitimacy. Additionally, personal details of the unsuspecting person can be found online, making the call plausible.

Repeated phone calls were received by a lady in this new scam. In one call the caller claimed to be Noble Attorney Gordon Moore. However the lady was astute enough to know that Mr Moore does not have an east Indian accent.
