Bogus Debt Collection letters in the ACT
Letters of demand are being issued by a fake debt collection agency in Canberra. The demand is for payment for unused Taxi Bookings.Attorney General Simon Corbell advises "It makes demand for payment, alleging that a Taxi was booked and then that booking wasn't taken up. It makes some quite outrageous claims about what the impact will be on a person's credit rating and also whacking a pretty big recovery charge on top of the alleged taxi fee that wasn't taken up".
Mr Corbell goes onto advises that "this is a hoax, it is a scam and people should not be taking action in relation to payment"
The taxi network in the ACT are not responsible for the letters and have no involvement. It looks like the letters were sent by an individual taxi driver, and the Attorney General is working with taxi networks to try and identify the individual.
These instances make the job of licensed, credible collection agencies more difficult.
