According to Interviews conducted by the New York Times, A US Debt Collection Company, Accretive Health, has engaged the practice of having debt collectors attend hospital waiting rooms in order to obtain payment of outstanding bills. It is being done by the hospitals in an attempt to recover outstanding monies as unpaid bills continue to grow and pressure to reduce costs mounts.
From a patients perspective, the Collector looks like a normal hospital employee. In some examples the collector had access to patient information The Minnesota Attorney General is reviewing the practice after receiving hundreds of complaints, and is investigating possible breaches of Privacy.
