The Australian Government has announced plans to make Australian citizens living and working overseas to pay back their accumulated education debts as they would do if they were working in Australia.
It was noted that this measure, whilst saving the Government money, may prove difficult to implement.
We know that the collection of consumer and commercial debts from overseas debtors can be difficult owing to the costs involved in a situations where the debtor is not cooperative.
However, it is likely the Government may have more success with its data matching schemes in place, and the ability to use amended assessments.
