HMRC to be given powers to deduct funds from bank accounts without going to court

Monday, July 28, 2014 - Posted by Philip Harvey

The March 2014 Budget announced by the United Kingdom government is set to give HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) powers to deduct money from peoples bank accounts without the need to go through the courts.

The ATO in Australia has a similar power already available to issue a Garnishee Notice.

To protect the citizen, a combined 5,000 pounds must be left in the bank accounts held by the debtors.

This is an example of a government trying to make sure it is the first creditor in line for payment.
