Indonesian Debt Collectors declared fugitives

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - Posted by Philip Harvey

As previously reported, back in March 2011 an Indonesian man died in the Citi Bank office whilst being questioned by three debt collectors working for a Collection agency used by Citi Bank. Following the death there were differing views about the cause of death, with medical professionals disagreeing whether or not hypertension played a role. Post-mortem reports gave the cause of death as asphyxiation, brain hemorrhage.

The Jakarta High Court found that two of the collectors had "deprived the liberty on purpose and against the law that resulted in someone's death" and sentenced them to five years in prison each.

Both collectors have failed to respond to a court summons for detention and have been declared fugitives.

Since the death, Citi Bank has now employed all debt collectors in-house in Indonesia. Debt Collection in Indonesia is largely unregulated.
