NSW Govt collects $1 million a day in unpaid fines

Recent reforms to the Fines Act were made to assist the NSW State Government collect more than $909 million on overdue fines. The reforms included;
  • formation of a debt recovery unit in the OSR
  • more power given to the OSR to track down defaulters,  including extending powers to collect information from other government agencies and credit reporting bodies

Overdue fines are being recovered at a rate of $1 million a business day, with overdue fines being reduced by $231 million.

Other initiatives were also made to improve collection rates. This included moratorium periods waiving all late fees on overdue fines. This alone resulted in 61,000 people promising to pay $67 million.
